The 2023 Future Science Prize awards ceremony was held on Tuesday. The laureates shared their scientific discoveries and innovations, including those in high-temperature superconductors, neural networks, and life sciences. The prize ceremony was the most prolific in its history, with 35 laureates. The laureates ranged from seasoned scientists born in the 1940s to young researchers born in the 1990s.

It is also the first time that a female researcher has won this prestigious award. The award was given to a team led by Dr. Yuan Xie, a senior scientist at the University of Hong Kong. Her team developed a computer algorithm that is capable of predicting if a patient will develop a specific cancer type within six months. This algorithm can help doctors provide better treatment for patients.

The Hong Kong Student Prize is a contest open to all enrolled secondary school students in the territory. Students are required to be nominated by their teachers before they can enter. Teachers can nominate up to 10 students. Students who are shortlisted will be invited to submit their artworks online before the submission deadline. HK$10,000 will be awarded to the winner of the Public Vote Prize, while HK$20,000 will be given to the winner’s school.

Last year’s winners include a man who made an artificial hand out of recycled plastic bottles, and a sculptor who used broken pieces of ceramics to create a work of art. The prestigious prize was established in 2012 after a generous donation by Professor Wang Gungwu.

A spokesman for the organisers said that RTHK was not allowed to publish any of the winning works in question, which is a violation of freedom of speech. The spokesman added that some journalists who could not publish their work in RTHK resigned and brought their works to Citizen News and Stand News, where they were published.

Hong Kong’s film industry has been struggling in recent years, but some of the city’s top-performing movies have won prizes at international festivals. Director Benny Chan’s police thriller Raging Fire took the top prize at this year’s 40th Hong Kong Film Awards, along with acting awards for its star Aaron Kwok and newcomer Jessie Li. The film also won best director, best action choreography and best screenplay. It was the first time that the awards were presented in front of an audience since the pandemic. The ceremony was shortened to two hours and 30 minutes. The event was attended by a record number of guests.
