The Sidney Prize, the Iwanter and the Rising Talent Awards
The sidney prize is a monthly award for outstanding socially conscious journalism that fosters social and economic justice. It is named for labor activist and president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA) Sidney Hillman, who worked tirelessly for a “better America” and a progressive industrial democracy. Hillman believed that a free press is essential to this struggle, and the Foundation continues his work by honoring journalists who illuminate critical issues for working people, seek equitable solutions, and champion civil liberties and democracy.
In the world of writing, there are many prizes to win. A writer might receive a prize for their essay or short story in a literary magazine, or even get nominated for a Pulitzer. However, there are also several prestigious awards given to those who are working on important social issues. These are some of the most important sidney prize to win.
This year’s winners of the Sydney Peace Prize are Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, co-founders of Black Lives Matter, who have dedicated themselves to fighting for human rights. The Sydney Peace Prize, established in 2013 by the Sydney Peace Foundation and backed by the City of Sydney, honours nominees who promote “peace with justice”, non-violence and human rights through their professional lives.
Each year, the Iwanter Prize, awarded by the College of Letters & Science, is given to one graduating student who, through senior thesis and general academic distinction, demonstrates outstanding humanities-based scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. The prize is made possible by a gift to UW-Madison from alumnus Sidney Iwanter (B.A. History, 1971). Iwanter’s own curiosity and will to document the knowledge of previous generations led him to secretly record lectures by his professor, historian Harvey Goldberg. His generous donation of these “bootlegs” is now available for all students to listen to and learn from.
